Why does creative work feel exhausting, even when the workload is manageable?

Creative fatigue is usually blamed on heavy workloads, endless revisions or difficult clients. Thisness explores a different possibility: what if much of the exhaustion comes from asking creative judgement to answer questions that should already have been settled?

There comes a point in some projects when every round of feedback feels heavier than the last. The work keeps moving forward, yet each revision seems to reopen questions that everyone thought had already been answered.

At first, every conversation feels as though it’s moving the project forward. Then, almost unnoticed, you find yourself discussing things you were sure had already been agreed.

Workload alone doesn’t explain that experience. The revisions are only the point where the problem becomes visible.

The problem isn’t that revisions happen. Creative work develops through critique, experimentation and refinement. The difficulty begins when each new round of feedback reopens questions that belong much earlier in the project. What are we trying to say? What matters most? New stakeholders arrive with different priorities, the direction shifts, and the work starts answering questions it should no longer be asking.

When you refine, you’re moving forward. When you redefine, you’re looping.

Once the questions beneath the work stop changing, revisions begin to do what they were always meant to do. They strengthen an agreed direction instead of searching for one. Feedback becomes easier to interpret because it is no longer trying to answer different questions each time.

This may be why revisions become endless. The problem is rarely the number of revisions themselves. Every reopened definition question quietly resets the project.
