What “Thisness” really means

What does “thisness” mean?

Thisness is the defining quality that makes something unmistakably itself. In creative work, it is what must remain true before design begins.

Every brand has something that makes it unmistakably itself

Freelance designers sense it intuitively.

But intuition alone rarely carries authority in conversation.

There is always something beneath the visible work.
Beneath the tone. Beneath the strategy.

A defining quality that makes a brand this and not something else.

Philosophers called it haecceitythisness.
The essence that makes something uniquely itself.

In creative work, it is often implied, but rarely defined.

Why it matters in freelance practice

When this layer is unclear, direction becomes negotiable.

A concept can be strong.
Execution can be refined.
Presentation can be persuasive.

But without definition, feedback drifts toward preference.

When a freelance designer can articulate what makes a brand unmistakably itself, something changes. Conversations become easier to navigate. Feedback becomes easier to evaluate. Decisions spend less time circling around preference.

The work becomes easier to defend.

Beneath expression

Design naturally moves toward expression. Moodboards are built. Language is explored. Ideas take form. But expression without foundation invites instability.

Thisness names what sits beneath expression and execution.

It defines what the work must remain true to before it takes shape.

When that layer is articulated, something changes. Feedback becomes easier to evaluate. Fewer decisions return for debate. Different people begin reaching similar conclusions.

The work starts pulling in the same direction. Not because the designer is more persuasive. Because the work has become easier to recognise and defend.

The shift

Every strong project already depends on a defined centre. The difference is whether that centre remains assumed or becomes articulated.

Without articulation, the designer negotiates preference. With articulation, they lead with principle.

That shift, from interpretation to definition, is where authority begins.
